Full form of CID – Crime Investigation Department

Crime Investigation Department (CID) was created by the British Government in 1902. CID is a form of State Police Comission. It is basically a Crime Investigation agency that comes under the Government of India. CID works and Investigates the crimes at all State levels of India.

CID officers Investigate major and complicated crimes like Murder, Terrorist, Rape, Serious Assault, Communal riots, and Fraud. They do their work at all levels and do each and every possible thing to solve the case. They collect the information and evidence, fingerprints, post mortem, coordinates with officers, and make detailed reports of all investigation process.

Eligibility to become a CID officer After 12th

There are many posts in the CID for the Candidates and want to make their career in Crime Investigation Department (CID). This is the Eligibility criteria mentioned below that first you have to fulfill only then you can start your journey in the CID field.

After completing the Graduation candidate can join this department as a sub inspector only through UPSC Exam.

Minimum Qualification: Candidate must be passed class 12th in any stream.

Qualification required for Exam: Candidate must have a bachelor degree from a recognized college
Entrance Exam for CID Civil service Exam conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) and Staff Selection Commission (SSC) Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Examination.

Minimum Age Limit: 20 years

Upper Age Limit: 27 years

Age Relaxation:

  • 3 years Relaxation for OBC Category Candidates – 20 to 30 years
  • 5 years Relaxation for ST/SC Category Candidates – 20 to 32 years

Citizenship: Candidate must be Indian Citizen.

Gender: Male and Female Both are Eligible.

Minimum Height:

  • Male – 165 cm
  • Female – 150 cm
  • Hills men and tribals – relaxation of 5 cm

Eye Sight:

  • Distant Vision – 6/6 in one and 6/9 in another one
  • Near Vision – 0.6 in one and 0.8 in another one

Chest: 76 cm inflated only for men.


  • Male – 1600 Meter in 15 mins
  • Female – 1 Km in 20 mins


  • Male – 8 Km in 30 mins
  • Female – 3 Km in 25 mins

Number of Attempts:

  • General Category – 4 attempts
  • OBC Category – 7 attempts
  • SC/ST Category – No limit

Selection Process:

  • Written Test
  • Physical Test
  • Personal Interview

Division or Branches of CID

There are many division of Crime Investigation Department (CID). The work is also different for every division of CID.

1) Fingerprint & Footprint Bureau:

These officer work on identifying and collecting the fingerprints and footprints from crime scenes.

2) Human Trafficking:

These officers work and investigate the cases of Human Trafficking. They also organize many programmes to make alert the district Police and other nodal agencies about the court guidelines and Investigation procedure for Anti Human Trafficking.

3) Missing Person Bureau:

These officers work to find the missing person and collect the evidence.

4) Crime Inspection:

This unit Inspect the crime scene, gather information, and collect the evidence at crime location.

5) Dog Squad:

This unit help other officers to collect the evidence with the help of trained dogs in CID.

How to become a CID officer after 12th

Your journey of becoming a CID officer start when you complete your class 12th in any stream. After 12th you need to check the eligibility criteria of CID. If you meet all the requirements and fulfill the eilibility criteria then you have to prepare for the entrance exam and physical fitness test.

You can get into CID through UPSC exam and SSC CGL exam. One of these exam you have to crack to become a CID officer. If you clear the UPSC exam then you join CID department at post of sub inspector.

After clearing written exam the next stage comes and that is physical fitness test. Many candidates get failed in this stage. So you need to prepare yourself very well to clear the physical test. Physcial Fitness requirements mention above in the Eligibility section in this article.

If you able to clear these two stages then you go through the personal interview and have to crack it. Personal Interview would be of 100 marks. Officers will check your Knowledge, thinking, skills, Interest, problem solving skill and personality.

Salary of a CID officer

Salary vary with the different post ranks in CID. Different post officers get different amount of salary per month. But starting salary of a CID officer can be between Rs 20,000 to Rs 250,000 per month. When you get promotion and become experienced in this field, your salary will be increased also. Experienced officer get salary between Rs 50,000 to Rs 60,000 per month in CID department.
