What is Intelligence Bureau (IB)?

The Intelligence Bureau (IB) is India’s domestic intelligence, Internal security, and counter Intelligence agency. It is known as the oldest organization globally compared to other branches of IB like CBI and RAW. The Intelligence Bureau head is Arvind Kumar. Intelligence Bureau comes under the Ministry of Home Affairs Government of India. The Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer collects secret information for the security of our country. This agency is used to gather intelligence from within India and also execute the counter Intelligence and counter-terrorism tasks.

The IB was Initially India’s Internal and External Intelligence agency. But in 1968, It entrusted with the task of Internal Intelligence only. The Intelligence Bureau (IB) maintains India’s Internal security.

Eligibility to become an Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer

Minimum Qualification: 10th class, 12th class, and Bachelor’s Degree. (Different qualification is required for a different post).

Minimum Age limit: 18 years

Upper Age limit: 27 years

Age Relaxation:

  • 3 years relaxation for OBC category candidates – 18 to 30 years
  • 5 years relaxation for SC/ST category candidates – 18 to 32 years

There are two top Posts/Ranks in Intelligence Bureau (IB)

  1. Assistant Central Intelligence officer (ACIO)
  2. Security Assistant (SA)

Physical Requirements for ACIO in IB

Minimum Height:

  • Male – 165 cm
  • Female – 152 cm
  • Hillmen & tribals – relaxation of 5 cm

Chest: 81 to 86 cm (only for men)


  • Male – 1600 meters in 15 mins
  • Female – 1 km in 15 mins


  • Male – 8 km in 30 mins
  • Female – 5 km in 30 mins

Weight: Weight should be according to the height for both males and females.

Eye Sight:

  • Distant Vision – 6/6 in one and 6/9 in another one
  • Near Vision – 0.6 In one and 0.8 in another one

Exams for Assistant Central Intelligence Officer (ACIO) and Security Assistant (SA) officer in IB

Intelligence Bureau Assistant Central Intelligence officer (IB ACIO) and IB SA are both graduation-level Examinations. For this exam, the candidate must have a bachelor’s degree from any recognized college. This examination is conducted under the authority of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) Government of India. This exam is conducted once a year.

  • Examination Name – IB ACIO and IB SA Exam
  • Conducted By – Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA)
  • Exams Stages – 3 (Written-test, English comprehensive and essay test, Personal Interview)

Salary of Intelligence Bureau (IB) officer

IB ACIO and IB SA are high salaries posts of the Intelligence Bureau (IB). The IB officers starting salaries vary between INR 40,000 to INR 50,000 per month. When you will be experienced your salary will be increased. After experience salary varies between INR 80,000 to INR 1 Lakh per month. Additional allowances are provided by the Government of India. Many facilities IB officers get by the government.
